John Picacio nasce a San Antonio, Texas, il 3 Settembre 1969.
Dopo un Diploma in Architettura presso la University of Texas at Austin nel 1992, diventa un illustratore professionista nel 2001 finendo su alcune delle più importanti riviste americane dedicate all’Immaginario disegnato (Realm of Fantasy, Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art), così come a una pletora di case editrici dedicate al fantastico a tutto tondo (Tor Books, Ballantine Books, Random House, Del Rey ecc…).
Nel 2005 si aggiudica il World Fantasy Award e il Chesley Award (riconfermato poi nel 2006), nel 2007 il Locus Award mentre nel 2012, 2013 e 2020 l’Hugo Award.
